When Ben and Tom Waters take the stage, it’s more than a concert. It’s an experience that leaves the crowd buzzing long after the final note is played.

It’s no surprise then that Ben Waters has been celebrated in the UK press as one of Britain’s most electrifying pianists and had his music described as “key-shattering boogie-woogie – like a bouncy castle for grown-ups.”

He came by the style quite naturally, having spent his early years during a time when Fats Domino, Ray Charles and Jerry Lee Lewis were dominating the airwaves.

He recounted how, at the age of 14, he was watching his old Ferguson TV set and saw Fats Domino for the first time.

“It was like somebody flipping a switch. It just changed my life.”

Ben started playing in pubs around Weymouth, Dorset for five and 10 pounds a gig. Sometimes they’d throw in a plate of sandwiches.

But over the decades the gigs grew much larger, and Ben has shared stages with musical icons, including Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, The Rolling Stones, Ray Davies, Jools Holland and many, many more.

“Piano playing would take all my worries away and take me somewhere else. It was like a tonic, and I fell in love with it,” he said.

But Ben’s musical journey becomes even more phenomenal when viewed through the eyes of his son, Tom Waters. As you might guess, Tom grew up surrounded by music, and by the time he was eight years old, he picked up a saxophone and joined his father on tour. By the time he was nine, Tom was already sitting in with Charlie Watts and met Bobby Keys and Tim Ries of the Rolling Stones.

By 13, Tom decided to leave traditional schooling and joined his father on tour on a full-time basis. They did shows around the world, playing some 900 shows in 52 countries in just three years.

Tom returned to formal schooling later when he completed four years at the Royal Academy of Music, where he graduated with honours.

Still performing shows with his father, Tom also regularly appears in concerts with world-class artists spanning a multitude of musical genres, from jazz to funk to Latin and soul. He also composes and records music around the globe for stage, screen and television.

And as much as Ben and Tom Waters are amazing musical talents in their own right, when they take the stage together, the audience experiences something almost magical. Ben delivers a style of piano that is nothing less than a masterclass in blues and boogie-woogie, delivered with a verve that is unsurpassed.

For his part, Tom’s soulful saxophone – sometimes tender and at other times exhilarating and full of life – is exactly what’s needed to complete the musical chemistry between father and son.

That deep musical bond between father and son is a combination of their respective love of music, combined with the passion and instinct that can only arise from two musicians who, at the top of their careers, share both blood and beat.

Ben and Tom Waters will be bringing their magic to Victoria on Sept. 3 and 4 when they take the stage at the Langham Court Theatre.
