Shift. A word that has many meanings, all of which can apply to what’s happening in the craft beer world right now. Referring to moving from one place to another, especially a short distance, changing gears, or a simple reference to time worked. It comes from the German word “Schichten”, which means to layer or stratify.
The industry has been shifting and making changes. It is finding new ways to succeed at a time when consumption has been changing, while costs have grown. New ideas are required to keep what was once a thriving industry alive. For many breweries, there is relief when it’s time to clock out and enjoy a tasty, freshly brewed beer.
Category 12 has been shifting recently. They renovated the bistro, added new menu offerings, and created a fresh, updated look. The space now welcomes those looking for a pint after work or wanting to bring friends, family, and significant others. One of their most recent additions is a Shift in liquid form.
Shift is a 5% pilsner, brewed using locally sourced and grown barley malt from the amazing folks behind Field Five Farms. Field Five has become a go-to maltster for local brewers, offering a wide range of bespoke roasts and grains that enable brewers to craft exceptional beers with locally sourced ingredients. This shift makes it easier to have control over mash bills and not rely on larger producers that don’t have the scalability to customize, meaning for beers that highlight exactly what Island flavours are about.
To celebrate this Shift, Category 12 Brewing is throwing a party with Field Five in the amazing space at the farm. If you’re seeing this in time, the event is on March 28 from 12-5, with tickets available through the brewery. There will be live music, games, barbecue, and just a great overall experience.
If you missed out on the party, don’t fret. The beer is around, at liquor stores, on tap at some of your favourite taprooms, and, of course, at the brewery, where you can try some of those new menu additions and enjoy the space, alongside some of the other new beers in the lineup, like their Infrared Red Ale, their Kaizen Rice Lager, and their Triple Helix Triple IPA Collaboration with Steel & Oak and Twin City Brewing.
