The Stolen Minks-High Kicks
Album Reviews: Rodney Decroo, the Stolen Minks
Rodney Decroo
Mockingbird Bible (Northern Electric)
If you like your folk-rock in the Dylan vein, check out this latest release from Rodney Decroo. Not only is Decroo’s voice reminiscent of Dylan (particularly on tracks like “Lies Are Just Lies” and “Spinning Wheel”), the songwriting and compositions on Mockingbird Bible also tip their hat to Bob—not that it’s a bad thing, as this collection of mostly acoustic (not to mention tender and quiet) tracks are worthy of repeat listens. You can practically picture yourself at the pared-down acoustic show.

The Stolen Minks
High Kicks (New Romance For Kids)
This all-chick quartet from Halifax sound like a cross between the B-52s, the White Stripes (check out the fuzzed-out guitar and bass drum on “Bring It”) and the Ramones. They also sound like a lot of fun: their high-energy meld of rockabilly, punk, surf and virtually every other kind of danceable music penned in the last 40 years can’t help but get you moving, even if the songs don’t really stand out individually. Plus, any album that starts with the sound of a beer being cracked is A-OK in my books.
