CD Review: Slim Sandy
Slim Sandy
This is the Night (Crow-Matic Records)
Local rollickin’ rockabilly Slim Sandy’s This is the Night is a great collection of cover tunes and originals, all chock full of more honky-tonk harmonica and references to “baby” than you can tap a toe to. While the covers are solid (particularly the opener, Jerry McCain’s “Next Door Neighbor”), it’s the originals that add a nice taste of originality to this true-to-the-genre rockabilly recording (my favourite is “Snowstorm Boogie”). The lo-fi recording technique employed definitely adds a feeling of authenticity; it sounds like you could have found this album in a pile of dusty LPs at your folks’ place—a funny thought, considering this is a digital-only release (head to Slim Sandy's website to find out how you can get a copy on your hard drive and into your headphones).
