Fall Guide: Dance Listings
Over on the dance front, in addition to this week’s presentation of Alonzo King’s Lines Ballet, Dance Victoria is bringing in Tara Cheyenne Performance’s comedy-dance production Nick & Juanita: Livin’ in My Dreams from October 23-26 at Metro Studio (as part of Romp!), followed by Alberta Ballet’s world-premiere production of seasonal favourite The Nutcracker, as visioned by Edward Stripe, from November 28-30 at the Royal.
The 30th annual Western Canadian Hungarian Folk Dance Festival runs out at the Mary Winspear Centre in Sidney, and you can see 11 Hungarian dance groups on October 12. Also on the international front is Alma de España, with the return of another Taste of Spain, this time at the Marriott Inner Harbour on October 18, with prizes for the best gypsy and flamenco outfits. And Ballet Victoria is mounting their own production of the classic The Firebird from October 31-November 2 at the McPherson Playhouse, followed by a Christmas run of Cinderella, running December 27-30 at the Royal. And not to be outdone, Moscow Ballet is touring the Great Russian Sleeping Beauty, November 3-4 at the Mac.
Likely the biggest dance event this fall, however, is Suddenly Dance Theatre’s 11th ROMP! Festival of Independent Dance, running October 23-26 at Metro Studio and featuring work by choreographers Lucie Carmen Gregoire, Shay Kuebler, Daniel McCusker, Helen Husak, Leah Wickes and the aforementioned Tara Cheyenne Friedenberg, plus the 10 writer-dancer combo Present / Tense 3. Also on the Romp! bill are “Cake on the Stage” with Treena Stubel (where, yes, cake is eaten on the stage), plus dance films from around the world, the Dancers Transition Resource Centre professional development forum with Andrea Gunnlaugson and Dreaming Dance, a forum hosted by DanceVictoria’s Stephen White.
And finally, triPOD Dance Collective and Vancouver’s Qfwfq present An Evening of Improvised Events, featuring solos, duos and trios set to a live musical accompaniment, on November 28 at Open Space.
