Monday’s Annual Summer Fiction Contest

How different did the city look 10 years ago? Fewer downtown condos and less people living on the streets, sure, but there were also more live music clubs and definitely not as many bicycles on the road. How will it look 10 years from now? That’s up to you.
For our summer fiction contest this year, we’re asking you to gaze into your personal crystal ball and imagine Victoria in 2019. Will we have grown into the progressive city of the future so many of us think we have the potential to be? Or have sea levels risen due to melting icecaps and has Fairfield become the city’s hottest new underwater neighbourhood? Good, bad or somewhere in between, we want to hear your vision of the future.

To qualify for the contest, each story must be between 800 and 1,200 words, include the phrases “blue bridge” and “earthquake” and be set in or around Victoria in the year 2019. Stories will be judged by prize-winning author Deborah Willis, whose new book Vanishing and Other Stories (Penguin) has been making headlines of late. The winning stories will appear in the July 16 issue of Monday Magazine.

First Prize: $200

Second Prize: $100

Third Prize: A stack of great books.
