But Who’s Lucy?
Lucy’s in the Square fresh in Fernwood
Whether you’re looking for the feel of an intimate dinner party or family cocktails and bocci in the afternoon, Lucy’s in the Square Market Café has the winning combo for you. Tucked away just across from the Belfry in Fernwood Square, Lucy’s is a comfortable, funky, fun and affordable place for lunch or dinner, or for a lazy Sunday brunch you can linger over. Monday got the lowdown during a one-on-one with owner Micki Keenliside . . . whose middle name is, you guessed it, Lucy.
Who are you?
Jeff and I are a ma-and-pa operation, doing what we love and creating a lifestyle that our family can all enjoy.
Why open a restaurant in this spot?
We chose this area because we live in Fernwood and love it. We feel like we’re part of a community that is growing and improving every day. Also, there are a huge number of restaurant-industry people in this area, so we figured at least they would come and eat if no one else did.
Does Fernwood need another eatery?
Yes. The more great places in Fernwood, the better off we’ll all be in business—and the more people will come out of the suburbs and downtown to see what we’ve got going on.
What’s the risk factor?
There’s always a risk opening your own business, never mind in this industry. However, life is a risk.
What were you doing six months ago?
I was working as a personal trainer and in a law firm and Jeff was a chef at the Oak Bay Marina.
Why change from chef to owner?
We’ve always dreamed of owning our own place and Jeff has patiently waited for a day when he can wear short sleeves in the kitchen and cook whatever he likes.
What’s on the menu?
We think of our food as “bistro inspired”—casual, good food with a focus on local products. Honest food with some Jeff Keenliside flare!
What can I get here that I can’t get anywhere else?
Chicken Confit. Everyone’s done duck but I’m digging the chicken way more—it’s so moist! I can’t promise we are the only ones doing this or that, however I have heard the things we are doing are the best around.
