There’s a new burger joint coming to Victoria, but it’s a bit of a self-proclaimed oddball.
The online menu is full of drool-worthy photographs of handhelds, some of which look strikingly similar to other burgers at other fast food chains, including one called a Vopper. There’s also milkshakes, ice cream and salads.
But on closer look, these items are all vegan.
Odd Burger, which holds title to the world’s first 24-hour vegan drive-thru, is set to open a new franchise location on 790 Fisgard Street, though the exact opening date is unannounced. Black Press reached out to the company but has yet to hear back.
According to its website, Odd Burger is a vegan, plant-based, fast-food chain. It started in 2014 as a grassroots organization that delivered organic fruit and vegetables from local farmers to customers’ doorsteps.
In 2015, co-founders James and Vasiliki McInnes developed vegan meal kits. One year later, they brought what is now known as their Famous Burger to the London, Ontario Ribfest.
The product sold out due to overwhelming demand, the website reads, and Odd Burger launched a food truck soon after. Six months later, they opened the world’s first 24-hour vegan drive-thru.
There are now Odd Burger locations in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario. Victoria and Vancouver will be the first cities in B.C. to get their own fast-food location.
The store’s compact design emphasizes take-out and delivery business with self-checkout kiosks that allow the restaurant to operate with as little as a single staff member, the website says.
It’s part of the company’s mission to make plant-based fast food widely accessible.
